stadium and win 24-17. michele tafoya is standing by with tony romo, kevin ogletree, and demarcus ware. here's michele. >> tony, you come in here to new york. you're facing the defending super bowl champions. big environment. how did you guys overcome that and play as well as you did? >> well, our approach is to take it one play, one day at a time and get better. and good or bad play, you've just got to keep doing it. disregard it, go to the next play and keep going. and whether you're playing in a parking lot or in giants stadium against the world champs you've got to be able to execute the plays. i think our team has done a great job taking that approach day in and day out and it's been exciting to see. >> end of the second quarter you guys score your first touchdown and from that point you put your foot -- you know, your pedal to the metal and kept going. what was behind that? what changed? >> i think you need to have that killer instinct, especially against a guy like eli and the team they have. when they lead we've got to battle and come back and you just have to really have that

killer instinct and say we've got to do it now, it's time. so we kept having that approach each play. >> tony, thanks. someone who did that tonight and proved it was your guy kevin ogletree over here. you came in, kevin, with 25 career catches, no touchdowns. you had your first two career touchdowns tonight. how do you explain the success with tony? >> just work. we've put in the hard work, like tony said. day in and day out, off-season, training camp. and you know, it's good to develop that continuity with your quarterback and the offense. and we felt good out there for the first game. and you know, we're going to try and keep rolling. >> there had been some questions in the off-season, who would be the cowboys' number three receiver. what did you expect coming into tonight? >> just to, you know, be at my best, do whatever it takes to help my team and be accountable. we're going to see if that continues, and we're going to play it like that. >> thank you so much, guys. let's turn to demarcus ware. what a performance by the defense tonight. how did you guys keep pressure on eli manning all night long?

>> you know, we sort of went back to the old game. and sort of seeing how he can linger around a little bit. we started on otas and mini camp and training camp just really trying to get pressure on the quarterback. that's what we had to do. we had to get it in key situations, and we did. >> and you did. two more sacks tonight. you're over the century mark. second fastest to that number behind the late great reggie white. personally what does that accomplishment mean to you? >> it's an honor when you say anything about reggie white, how he played the game, his demeanor, i'm trying to model myself the same way. it's just an honor to be even mentioned with his name. >> two big additions to the defensive backfield, wrandon carr and mo claiborne. what did they do tonight that was special? >> they made eli hold the ball a little more. he couldn't go off his first and second reads. gave the pass rush a lot more time to get there and create a little bit of havoc out there. and just having that opportunity to have morris claiborne and brandon carr and all those guys on the same page was just

awesome. >> congratulations on the win. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> all right, michele, this is the ninth year that the defending super bowl champion has had the honor of opening up the nfl season at home. the previous eight the defending champ at home had won every time. the dallas cowboys come in here and upend that trend. coach, how did they do it? >> well, we said at halftime, bob, both teams were ugh struggling running the ball. one of the quarterbacks was going to have to get hot. and tonight it was tony romo. dallas made the decision to go after these dbs -- >> i really felt like this was the turning point, this is where tony romo gained his confidence. tight man-to-man coverage and threw a bullet right to dez bryant. >> and then this is what tony does best, what the giants were fearing. when he gets out of the pocket, he can improvise and make plays. kevin ogletree read it, read the body language, went deep and got open. the next ball to ogletree was a double move. this was a blitz. they read it. and a great call by romo to get the ball to ogletree. he. >> and this is the third down -- this is a first down and 30.

and the confidence, the decision-making by tony romo to see something, give a hand signal, run a double move into double coverage, and miles austin coming up with a huge play down the field. we questioned if tony romo can make these plays. >> yes. and with the game on the line they needed a first down to ice it. comes back to ogletree and wins the ball game. tony romo won this game for dallas tonight. >> and he had lost the last five games he had started against the giants. tonight 22 of 29 for 307. three tds and one pick. >> the secondary was deflated. they lost michael coe. and they've made a conscious effort to go after him. but tony romo plays smart, he plays sound. he delivered the ball on target tonight. >> we talked about demarco murray, his ability to take some of that pressure off tony romo and run the ball. they had a lot of success running the ball. but tony romo, you have to give him credit because no one thought he could come into giants stadium on the road and make those clutch throws in the

thanks for joining us for this special primetime edition of nbc bay area news. i'm janelle wang. >> i'm roger mathai. chp officer kenyon youngstrom has died. tonight's previously planned vigil is now turning into a memorial. doctors in john muir medical center in walnut creek pronounced youngstrom dead at 5:10 this evening. he had been in critical condition since yesterday morning when a suspect shot him in the head during a traffic stop on 680. his family, his colleagues and the community now mourning the loss of youngstrom. >> this has been a life-altering

tragedy for the family, and certainly a tragedy that has affected us to the core. the family remains strong, united and courageous. >> it is a painful time for many people. investigators are now moving quickly on this case. they have identified 38-year-old christon lacy as the gunman but there's no word yet on a motive. we have team coverage tonight. nbc bay area cheryl hurd is at the suspect's home near chico. we start with jean nelli at a vigil for the officer. >> reporter: lots of tears and hugs in cordelia tonight. a police chaplain told the large crowd tonight the officer was taken off life support at 6:05. that announcement was met with solemn silence. dozens of people gathered here in cordelia tonight, mourning the loss of the officer and mourning the loss for the family. the youngstrom's family now faces a future without a father and a husband.

some of the youngstrom's coworkers held each other and cried. congressman john garimund irk spoke about the need to stop senseless violence and the need to pull together and help the youngstrom family. cordelia is a tight-knit community full of families. many of the parents and kids at the vigil know the four youngstrom kids through school and sports. some parents spent the day at oak brook elementary school helping students understand one of life's toughest lessons. >> it was rough. it was a lot of tears, a lot of concern, a lot of questions. so a lot of kids asking what they could do to help. >> see between our little league connections and baseball and others, everybody's connected to each other at all of our local schools are all tied together very closely. >> reporter: that closeness has the death of officer youngstrom hitting close to home for many families. the vigil gave people a chance to express some of that emotion and to send the family a message that they are not alone. families here in cordelia say

they are ready to offer the family help with meals or rides or whatever kind of support they need. reporting live in core deal yeah, jean elle, nbc bay area news. >> jean, thank you. within the hour the chp releasing this statement "this is a very sad day for the chp as well as all californians. officer youngstrom was a valued member of the chp family, a dedicated officer and soldier who gave husband life serving the people of california." he now joins a distinguished group of heroes whose names are engraved upon the chp memorial fountain and who will forever be remembered for their valiant sacrifice and service." tonight we're also getting new details about the moments that led up to the shooting, and more on the suspect. he is a 38-year-old man from corning, california near chief coast today officials identified christopher lacy as the man they say shot and killed officer youngstrom after he was pulled over on 680 in wall net creek yesterday morning. a second chp officer then shot and killed lacy.

the official cause of death is listed as a gunshot wound to the head. inside lacy's jeep wrangler investigators say they found a loaded semiautomatic handgun, two loaded magazines and a knife. late last night officers raided his home in corning and confiscated six computers. police say his only prior run in with the law was a dui in marin county six years ago. investigators say they're still trying to determine a motive. >> we have been told that he pretty much keeps to himself. he's a loner. so at this point, as far as a motive of why he shot the officer, that's something we're still trying to work on. >> today investigators also offered an explanation for one of the other big questions, why was officer youngstrom's cruiser parked in front of the suspect's vehicle? normal protocol is to park the cruiser behind. investigators say officer youngstrom actually had first responded to a call about a dead deer at that location. the a fellow officed in a separate car radioed that he was going to pull over a jeep

wrangler for an obstructed license plate. youngstrom saw the wrangler approaching and waved the driver over to the shoulder right behind his car. at that point youngstrom approached the suspect's car, had a brief conversation with him, and without warning officials say the suspect shot youngstrom in the head. though he lived in sausalito for years, lacy's last-known address is in the small town of corning. tonight his neighbors are offering some new clues about his life. nbc bay area cheryl hurd has spechbt the last several hours talking with those neighbors and joins us now from corning. cheryl. >> reporter: raj, this is a community of about 3,000 people not very many people knew christopher lacy. but we found two people who probably knew him the best. >> we were shocked that he did what he did. that was just so horrible. >> reporter: gerry ward lives across the street from christopher lacy. she says on several occasions she tried to be neighborly. but, she says, lacy was a loner.

>> he was so quiet. he didn't want to get involved. we asked him if he wanted to join the old-timers fire department to help us out as a volunteer. he said he was interested. a week later he said, no. >> reporter: the 36-year-old who police say shot chp officer kenyon youngstrom during a traffic stop bought this home on stage coach road near corning about a year and a half ago for $35,000. his neighbor, bob, says he paid the mortgage off the in about a year. bob says lacy worked from his home as a computer programmer. he says even as he watched police search lacy's home, he had no clue that his neighbor had anything to do with the tragic shooting on interstate 680. >> he didn't give me the impression of being a radical survivalist of any kind. just a survivor like anybody else. wanting to garden. >> reporter: one neighbor was pretty emotional, saying that lacy will be missed. another neighbor was pretty forceful saying that he got what he deserved.

officer as the pursuit continued in the 800 block of 42 and avenue. the chp officer was not injured. >> three other suspects were arrested a few days after that shooting, but thomas had been on the run ever since. . a pivotal night in the race for the white house, his speech ended within the hour and it's already being called by many political insiders as a potential game changer in this election. former president bill clinton with the thunderous message in support of president obama. these are pictures just moments ago inside that convention center in charlotte, north carolina. mr. clinton and mr. obama together on stage following clinton's speech. you see the warm embrace there, perhaps to say thank you. clinton's speech electrified the crowd. >> are we where we want to be today? no. is the president satisfied? of course not. but are we better off than we were when he took office?

>> also speaking tonight, former san francisco district attorney carmella harris considered to be a rising star in the party. she's now state's attorney general and was also asked to address the delegates. she wasted no time going after mitt romney. >> mitt romney sub describes to the cynical logic that says the american dream belongs to some of us and not all of us. >> our coverage continues of the dnc tonight on our 11:00 newscast. former alameda county supervisor facing more problems tonight. the 41-year-old has been charged with child felony and child endangerment charges. police were called to a home in orange last week where lockyer and her 9-year-old son were visiting. officers reportedly found meth and drug paraphernalia inside that home. a spokeswoman with the district attorney's office said lockyer showed signs of being under the influence of a drug. she reportedly entered a not guilty plea on august 30th and was released.

zingo. an interesting twist in the ongoing battle to fix oakland police department issues. at&t is saying it is not responsible for the problems that have left officer without a reliable way to communicate. the company's announcement

contradicts findings from an internal investigation last month. that investigation reportedly found that at&t cell sites were interfering with oakland's public radio safety system. while today at&t says that it has finished testing 16 of its oakland cell sites and that results show that its cellular signal is operating with an fcc requirements and did not cause the interference. at&t says it will continue to try and help the department figure out what exactly is causing this problem. a sonoma county supervisor says he's eager to tell his side of the story after he spent part of monday in a san diego jail cell. 31-year-old he ran curillo was charged with felony battery and fighting after an incident at 2:00 a.m. on monday in san diego's gas lamp district. he and another man were jailed on $10,000 each in terms of their bond. a third man was knocked unconscious and hospitalized. curillo says in a statement he was socializing with friends when a rowdy group approached and harassed the women in his

group. his next court appearance is set for mid october. take a look at this. what you see is surveillance video of what san francisco police say is a crime in progress. tonight investigators are hoping this video will help them catch the people responsible. they say the targets have all been elderly chinese women. the victims are approached and are told they've stepped in blood and that they and their valuables need to be purified or face years of bad luck in each case, the victims bring a bag of their gold and jewelry. then doing a so-called purification ceremony the suspects secretly swap the bag for one full of junk. police say the thieves have already made off with nearly $2 million in the ongoing scam. anyone with any information on this case is asked to call police. right now in morgan hill, volunteers, friends and the family of sierra lamar are holding a candlelight vigil in her honor of the six months after the disappearnce of the 15-year-old student, a high profile visitor stopped by the search center today.

that's representative zoe lofgren whose congressional district includes much of the south bay. she took part in the blessing before today's search by volunteers. sierra lamar disappeared on her way to high school. police have arrested a suspect in her murder but lamar has not been found. >> as i drove in here today, i saw little children going off to school. and it drives home the fact that as a community we need to stand together, keep our children safe. >> at tonight's event, volunteers are hoping to raise money to pay for continuing search efforts. our own george kidiama will have more on nbc bay area news at 11:00. still to come, the damage and aftermath following a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake in costa rica today. and defending deadly force. vallejo police explain their

30 homeless people relocated and 60 tons of trash removed. those are the latest figures released today from the most recent round of cleanup around san jose waterways. in may city crews conducted five cleanups. 30 homeless people were moved into hotels while case managers figured out a long-term housing solution for them. as required by law, their belongings were placed in city storage. next month officials are set to re-examine their policies regarding homeless camp cleanups in hopes of finding a solution that prevents the camps from re-emerging. the city of richmond's proposed soda tax is turning into a battle over freedom of speech. here's the rub. city law requires that major contributors against the soda tax or any other measure on the ballot for that matter be listed on campaign literature. the community coalition against beverage taxes, which is fighting that soda ban, says that violates their freedom of speech. the coalition filed suit against

the city in federal court and a hearing on that matter is set for this friday morning. the proposed penny per ounce tax intended to fight childhood obesity will be voted on during the november election. social gaming, you know this, it's a big deal. but for bay area-based zingo social gaming has stumbled in a big way. the company that was once the talk of the town is in need of a new success story. so they've launched farmville 2. our business and tech reporter scott budman has an inside look. >> reporter: it's a new farm powered by the latest technology with big goals. >> we want this to feel like it's the best five or ten minutes of the player's day. >> reporter: and an entire company counting on it to be successful. farmville 2, sequel to the game that helped launch online social gaming and zingo along with it. now having stag gathered to a stock price less than a third of what it was when it went public, zynga needs a hit more than

recapping our top story in this special post nfl newscast, the worst possible outcome for a chp officer shot by a suspect on 680 yesterday. tonight chp announced that officer kenyon youngstrom was taken off life support and

pronounced dead shortly after 6:00 p.m. tonight. investigators say steven lacy shot him after being pulled over on a traffic stop. a second officer shot and killed the suspect. officers say inside lacy's jeep wrangler they found a loaded semiautomatic handgun, loaded magazines and a knife. he was pulled over because part of his license plate was obscured. his only prior run in with the law was a d,i six years ago in the marin county. chp says a dashboard camera says he and officer youngstrom had a short conversation before lacy shot him. officer youngstrom leaves behind a wife and four children. yesterday's shootout on 680 is a sobering reminder about the danger officers face every day. we looked through the numbers and found out that confrontations between drivers and officers are more common than you might think. our reporter looked into the numbers. >> reporter: any officer will tell you they leave home every day not knowing if they will

make it home afterwork. the fbi reviewed data from about three quarters of police agencies nation-wide. and here's what they found. from 2000 to 2010, more than 20,000 police officers nation-wide have been injured in gun-related incidents. that's roughly 9.5% of the country's police force. officers confronted with a gun while making a stop or during a pursuit. in california, the times reports that since the year 2000, four chp officers have died of gunshot wounds, and five others injured in gun-related violence. the latest incident was in may of this year in bakersfield. i got an e-mail a few hours ago from joseph mcnamara at the hoover institution. he said this particular incident on 680 is rare and troubling because it happened so early in the morning. where presumably no drugs or alcohol were involved. that is yet to be determined by the coroner. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay

officer-involved shootings in vallejo just this year. critics in the community are raising questions about the increasingly frequent use of deadly force. a critical warning for everyone tonight from pge. a new phone scam is growing. pge is warning customers that an unidentified man has started calling fairfield residents claiming to be a pge representative. in each call he said the person's utility bill was delinquent and they needed the customer to provide their credit card information over the phone in order to keep their power on. pge says a real employee would never call and ask for credit card information over the phone. two people are reported dead and at least ten injured after a powerful earthquake in costa rica today. the 7.6 magnitude quake shook up the country's western coast just before 8:00 a.m. it hit about 90 miles west of the capital city of san jose. this is video from a television station in costa rica and you can see the shaking. damages are still being tallied.

on this first day of the nfl season, a new study looks at football players and their rix for degenerative brain diseases. researchers studied more than 12,000 professional football players in the league for at least five years. 10% have died since the start of the study back in 1959. they found football players were three times more likely to die from diseases that damage brain cells like alzheimer's and lou gehrig's than the general population. players in speed positions like quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers were significantly more likely to have a degenerative brain disorder. the crowd was shocked. a scary moment at the oakland coliseum today during the, a's game. take a look. a's pitcher brandon mccarthy

lightning strikes for tonight. roads are extremely slick where any of this rain is touching the ground. back to danville, up to alamo on 680, walnut creek. traveling on interstate 80 very sporadic from fairfield to vacaville. there is again moderate rainfall. as we take a look at the current numbers, kind of cold. temperatures in the 50s right now for the most part from the north bay down the peninsula. hd sky camera network tracking a lot of cloud cover tonight and isolated storms. but right now we're undergoing a slight bit of clearing at least in san francisco in that marine layer is up against the coast. so here's what we can expect at least the next 48 hours. at subtropical moisture that brought us wild and unusual weather today starts to kick off to the east. eventually this area of low pressure will start to lift out. that will eventually also start to signal in some warmer weather into our forecast. for thursday and also into friday. we can't kick out the chance here of isolated thunderstorms. the best chance of that will be on thursday.

then as we head throughout friday that's when that sun and also some warmer weather looks to slide on in. so for tonight, chance of thunderstorms as we mentioned, maybe even some isolated hail with any storms that do develop. for the morning hours we'll keep that in the forecast. then by thursday night we'll have a few lingering showers before we start that clearing trend as we head throughout friday. i know a lot of you really don't know what to do in some cases when we get that thunder and lightning. it's a rare event for us. so this may seem like common sense. i know to a lot of you at home may have lived elsewhere. if you're outdoors, seek shelter not under a tree. best advice to head inside. stay off the phones, that includes cell phones and also land lines. and do not use the shower and -- or decide to take a bath. if you can hear that thunder you are close enough to potentially get struck by lightning. that can happen even right here in california. throughout thursday up 70s in the north bay. 70 oakland, 72 in san jose. we'll have breaks of sunshine by the afternoon. dry and more typical california weather will return by friday.
